I’ve always fancied myself as a pretty decent widget programmer.  But recently, I’ve been trying to build a coupon widget to save money for the site I’m painfully behind development on.

It’s a fairly novel idea where you enter the product and it searches the internet for the best coupon.  It spits out a decent looking coupon like this:

Widget Coupon

NOT VALID (Example Widget Coupon)

The bar code is working and maps to the coupon code found for the product.  Everything is automated so all you have to do is enter the product and it spits out a fancy coupon.  Is this overkill or what?

You’ll have a dirty blue widget christmas if you don’t install the Santa Tracker on your iGoogle page.  It’s a constant reminder that Christmas is almost here and we’re almost out of money.

So run over to the Norad Santa Tracker to install a Christmas Widget.

Dirty Blue Widgets

December 16, 2008

There is something familar about dirty blue widgets that I just can’t get my mind wrapped around.  The simple case where you wrap a concept around a set of processes and procedures making it possible to create a widget out of thin air.

But conceptually building widgets from scratch actually has been from eons adding on to invention after evention to creating new widgets that actually appear to exist out of nothing.

Is this something we need to concern ourselfs with or are we becoming god-like and creating widgets for our amusement. My new religion of widget creationism.

So far asDirty Blue Widgets go, I amuse myself with creating these thingies out of thin aire.  These simple Dirty Blue Widgets!

Amazon Hot Video Games Widget

November 29, 2008

This non-commercial version of the Amazon Hot Video Games Widget is a cool widget that you can add your site. It does not have Amazon Associate links embedded in it so feel free to use it on your site. If you’re a gamer like me, sometimes it’s nice to have a gadget that will show you the hot video games without visiting Amazon.

How To Create a Dirty Blue Amazon Widget

Now if you want to create your own widget with your own Amazon Associate links this is what you do:

  1. Goto to the Amazon Widget Source
  2. Replace ‘widgetsamazon-20′ in amzn_wdgt.tag=‘widgetsamazon-20′; with your Association key.
  3. Copy the code and install it on your site.

Simple.

If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering what to do with all that leftover turkey from yesterday. Usually you’ll pull out your favorite Turkey Tetrazzini or Turkey Pot Pie recipe and continue on with the feast.

But here at Dirty Blue Widgets, we like to try something new and the Recipe of the Day Widget is the perfect place to find a special recipe for all your leftover turkey. The “Five-spice Chicken Recipe” in Washington Post’s Recipe of the Day is where we’re going to start to get some tasty Chinese-flavored turkey.

This recipe would work best if you haven’t cooked your turkey yet, but it will make a very favorable leftover turkey casserole dish. Add some leftover veggies and you have a comp meal. Enjoy!

I was working last night on Dirty Blue Widgets and I missed the first twenty minutes of Fringe.  Now if I had this widget installed, It would have reminded me that I needed to switch over to entertainment mode and start watching on of my favorite shows on Fox.

Fringe sorta reminds me of the X Files with the FBI investigating weird things on the Fringe of Science.  Of course there’s some evil corporation at the root of the problem.

You can install your Fringe Widget here.

The Walmart Black Friday Sales Widget will help you get the best deals on Walmart directly from Google. You will locate discounts on everyday items like Shop Low Prices Online for Electronics, Toys, Home, Garden, and Baby Products.

This widget installs in a flash on your iGoogle page so you can quickly find the best Walmart sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

But you don’t have to wait until the Black Friday Sales start. Adding this widget from Dirty Blue Widgets Review, you can get a head start before the shopping rush begins.

And I’ll tell you, I was out shopping today and the Malls were packed. Lots of sales before the sales so it’s best to start shopping at Walmart before Black Friday.

I really like the MyBlogLog Widgets to bring about the social nature of blogging, but when you’re using WordPress as your hosting platform, you simply cannot install javascript code.

However, there’s a Dirty Blue Widget trick that allows you to add the MyblogLog recent reviewers to your sidebar.

  1. Go to your MyBlogLog Community Page and click on the widgets link. For example, here is the Dirty Blue Widget Review Community Page.
  2. From there, click on the image based widget.
  3. MyBlogLog will give you the HTML code to insert your widget into a sidebar or into a post shown here:

Next, the CSS styles need to get copied into your style sheet. This is done by editing the CSS for your blog. To do this:

  1. From the WordPress Dashboard, click on the Design Tab.
  2. From the Design Tab, click on the Edit CSS link.
  3. From here, you want to insert the CSS MyBlogLog provides. Just copy the code in between the “<style>” to “</style>” tags and paste it at the bottom of the editor.
  4. Save the changes.

You now have a non-javascript based MyBlogLog Widget.

Einsteins’ famous theory “e=mc²,” or Energy is the mass off an object times the speed of light squared was proven correct. According to Yahoo News,

A brainpower consortium led by Laurent Lellouch of France’s Centre for Theoretical Physics, using some of the world’s mightiest supercomputers, have set down the calculations for estimating the mass of protons and neutrons, the particles at the nucleus of atoms.

It only to 103 years and some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world to match the genius of Einstein. But do you know what other theories Einstein held in his head?

Luckily, there is a Dirty Blue Widget that you can add to your iGoogle page that brings this wisdom and insight to you every day.

All you need to do is install this Albert Einstein Gadget on your iGoogle page and you’ll get a fresh quote of day.

Dirty Blue Widgets in Review

November 20, 2008

I just started reviewing Dirty Blue Widgets to see if I’m staying on topic.  Basically I want to review nothing but widgets and gadgets that you can insert into your site or blog, but sometimes my mind wanders and I forget what I was saying …

Oh, yeah, now I remember.  This widget is pretty sweet because:

  • It can be used to create a tag cloud, and
  • Just by looking at the result, I can tell if I’m on topic or not for this Dirty Blue Widget Review site.

So right now, I’m basically talking about XBOX widgets, but I promise to talk about more generic Dirty Blue Widgets in later posts.

Until next time,
